Tokyo Zoo welcomes first baby elephant born here

Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo opened its doors for visitors to see the first baby elephant born in this 100-year-old zoo.

Since December 1, Japan’s oldest zoo, Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo, opened its doors to visitors to see the first baby elephant born at this more than 100-year-old zoo.

At the time of birth on October 31, this baby elephant was about 1 m tall and weighed 120 kg. This is a combination of an elephant mother named Authi and an elephant father named Artid, a gift that Thailand sent to Japan in 2002 to celebrate the birthday of Princess Aiko, the only daughter of the Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. Sadly, elephant Artid’s father passed away in August due to poor health from illness.

Although she was born more than a month ago, this elephant “girl” still does not have a name. Currently, Ueno Zoological Gardens has asked the public to vote online among the names of baby elephants proposed by the Thai Embassy in Tokyo, including Arun (Dawn), Atsadong (Sunset) or Tawan (Sun) in Thai. The final results will be announced on December 15.

Currently, the visit of baby elephants takes place only 2 hours a day to avoid causing stress to the animals.
