The temperature in Lake Valdai suddenly drops, allowing small blocks of ice to form.
A series of small, flower-shaped icicles appeared on the surface of Lake Valdai in northwest Russia on December 18, RT reported. “The temperature in Valdai yesterday was just a little below zero, but today it is around -20 degrees Celsius,” said Nikolai Sokolov, director of the Valdai National Park. In 24 years of work, it was the first time that he attended such a beautiful and spectacular show.
The phenomenon occurs due to a combination of many factors. The water must be warm enough to flow, and a sudden cold snap will cause ice to form near the surface of the lake. The water flowed through the top of the ice cube, quickly cooled, and froze into ice petals. This process is repeated over and over, making flowers several inches tall.
However, the ice flower did not last long. When the wind gets stronger, the temperature rises, combined with heavy snowfall, they are quickly destroyed.
