These rare wild animals belong to the avian family but have been deprived of the species’ privilege to spread wings and fly in the sky.
1. Takahe Bird
This bird was only found in New Zealand and was thought to be extinct until a few were found near Lake Te Anau on Mount Murchison. At around 63cm long, it is the largest bird in the Rallidae family with strong legs and an unusually large beak.
Currently, only about 225 animals live in nature reserves. Many protective measures have been strengthened to avoid the threat of species extinction. However, its slow growth and low fertility pose a huge threat to this rare bird.
2. Penguins
Penguins cannot fly, but they are excellent swimmers with a very large wingspan. Penguins mainly live in the cold climates of the southern hemisphere. Currently, it is estimated that there are around 20 species of penguins. The largest species is the emperor penguin, while the smallest is the blue penguin. The favorite foods of penguins are fish, squid and other marine life that they find in the water.
3. Kiwi bird
It is a bird native to the country of New Zealand and is considered a national symbol. There are only about 5 species of this bird. Kiwis are so small that they are quite shy and specialize in nightlife. You can only see them during the day at designated bird sanctuaries. They have a very good sense of smell and are a special breed with a nostril at the end of their beak.
4. Ostrich
It is the largest species on the list and the only species living in a group. The ostrich can be thought of as a “racing” super speed with speeds of up to 46 km / h. This bird’s brain is so small that it often does some pretty crazy things. You shouldn’t be stupid to get close to this bird because it is big and quite aggressive with an “unpredictable” kick.
5. Cassowary cat head
Although smaller than the common ostrich, the cassowary in Australia is also an unusually large bird. Their staple food consists of fruits and other plants. They are also an aggressive and very dangerous breed of bird, but they were extinct not long ago.
6. Bird Rhea
A native bird native to South America, the Rhea bird has very large wings and often spreads its wings in flight. Only two species of this breed are the American Rhea bird and the Rhea Darwin bird. They take 6 months to mature, but it is only up to 2 years that they begin to reproduce and mate.
7. Kakapo Bird
This bird was very popular in New Zealand previously with many ancient fossils found everywhere. However, the Kakapo bird is in danger of extinction, so many conservation plans are urgently being implemented to prevent this potential danger. The good sign is that recently the number of species has increased dramatically. This is a nocturnal bird, so it’s no surprise that the name Kakapo means ‘night owl’. Plus, with many parrot-like characteristics, they have another name like “Parrot Owl”.
8. Emu bird
It is Australia’s largest native breed of birds with a height of up to 2m, it is also a tall runner with a top speed of 30km / h, although still lower than ostriches. They live in very good environmental conditions and are practically free from any threats. There are about 3 different bird species of this genus in Australia.
9. Galapagos Cormorants
Their name is due to the fact that they are originally from the Galapagos Island near Ecuador. It is the only bird of the cormorant genus to have lost the ability to fly, it lives mainly underwater and on the ground. Their favorite foods are fish, eel, baby octopus, and other small sea creatures. The breeding season of the Galapagos Cormorant usually begins during the cold months of July to October, as they are then guaranteed an abundant food source. Only about 1,500 remain in the wild, so the risk of extinction of this species is also very high.
10. Mallard Campbell
There are two species of ducks that cannot fly, the Auckland Mallard and the Campbell Mallard. Mallard Campbell is a nocturnal forager. They often eat insects and crustaceans. This duck is found on Campbell Island, so it is named after the island.
So far the Campbell duck is in danger of extinction, scientists are conducting research to preserve and maintain the development of this rare species.
11. Miscellaneous Titicaca
This adorable bird is found in Peru and Bolivia and lives mainly on Lake Titicaca. Although unable to fly, this bird can swim fairly quickly and catch small fish as bait. The species of Titicaca have lost thousands of individuals due to hunting by fishermen.
12. Weka Bird
This flightless bird is famous for being angry and curious. They often hear more than they see. And like pandas, Weka birds are known to steal food and then seek other shelter to explore.
13. Hummingbirds from the island of Guam
This species of bird is quite large on the island of Guam. Because they often nest on the ground, they cannot fly, so they are less resistant to predators. That is why, in the 1960s, when brown snakes appeared on the island, the number of these birds dropped significantly. And in 1983, this bird was completely extinct.
14. Bird inaccessible
The inaccessible island in the South Atlantic Ocean has a special bird that attracts many visitors. This bird lives around the large cliffs of the island and is considered the smallest flightless bird in the world. They often roam the grasslands and search for insects and pests for food.
