Two new dogs born in Spain have distinctive green coats, but one died soon after.
Two puppies were born on June 3 in the town of Laguna de Duero. Unlike the mother and her cubs, they have bright green fur that covers their entire body.
“I thought the dogs were dirty and tried to bathe them, but the odd color of the coat still hasn’t gone away. I couldn’t believe when I first saw them,” said Aida Vallelado Molina, owner of the dogs.
Both dogs are weaker than the others. The children died shortly after birth. Males are still alive but weak and lose their pigmentation.
Daniel Valverde, a local veterinarian, is studying the origins of the distinct skin color of these two individuals and the causes of their deaths. Daniel says that no similar case has been documented in Spanish scientific literature.
In 2012, a puppy named Hulk in England was born with green fur. The mother is of the Labrador breed. Experts believe they may come in contact with a substance called biliverdin, which is found in the placenta.
