Rare yellow fur seal with blue eyes

Fur seals of different colors were born almost a month ago on the island of Tiuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Siberian Times reported on September 9.

Normally, the probability that such a partial albino seal will be born is only 1 in 100,000. In addition, these young are also at risk of being rejected by the herd. This happened a few years ago with another albino seal named Nafanya.

Marine biologist Vladimir Burkanov discovered small seals with yellow fur, blue eyes and pink feet on Tiuleny Island during a field trip. He thinks this youngster has hopes of staying in the herd.

“The baby seal seems to be well fed and very active, so the mother must have given him lots of milk. The other seals weren’t paying him much attention so maybe something was wrong. was not chased or bitten, “Burkanov said.

Like other fully or partially albino creatures, pup seals have poor eyesight. Its ability to mature and reproduce is also not high, Burkanov said based on his knowledge and experience from many years of watching fur seals.

However, scientists also recently recorded a case of seals with partial albinism living to adulthood on Bering Island. “He did not participate in this year’s breeding season and is part of the ‘unique’ section of the fur seal population. He is possibly the first North Pacific fur seal with a coat color. unusual never recorded live to adulthood, “said Burkanov.

Experts will pay attention to the seal population on Tyuleny Island to help quickly if the albino cubs are hunted. In that case, maybe they’ll take her to a Russian aquarium like they did with Nafanya.
