At dawn on October 21, Vietnamese astronomers can observe the Orionid meteor shower – an average meteor shower with around 20 to 30 meteor streaks per hour.
According to Dang Vu Tuan Son, president of the Association of Young Astronomers of Vietnam (VACA), the Orionid meteor shower typically lasts from October 2 to November 7 each year. However, in 2017, the peak of this phenomenon fell on the morning of October 21.
However, the peak hour of this meteor shower in Vietnam is also when the Moon is close to the constellation Orion. Therefore, the observation will be hampered because the number of meteors is drastically reduced. It is predicted that there are only about 10 to 15 meteors per hour in areas with ideal weather and atmosphere, and a further decrease in areas with heavily polluted air.
Mr. Son said, the time to observe this phenomenon from the middle of the night on October 20 to the time of sunrise on October 21.
Specifically, around 10 p.m. on October 20, the constellation Orion began to appear fully in the eastern sky. If there is not enough viewing angle, viewers can wait until 12:00 am on the 21st, this constellation will rise higher and around 3:30 am to 4:21 pm the constellation will be the highest and move towards the Where is.
When observing the meteor, in addition to choosing a safe location, viewers should choose a location with a wide viewing angle, less air pollution, and no light in the eyes. Pay special attention to weather issues.
