China’s third largest Ba Dan Desert with an area of 47,000 square kilometers is shedding white snow.
White snow covers the dunes of the Badain Jaran Desert after temperatures in Zhang Yi, northwest China’s Gansu Province, dropped to -25 degrees Celsius this weekend, according to Long. Room. Covering a total area of 47,000 square kilometers, the Jilin Ba Dan Desert, which spans the provinces of Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia, is the third largest desert in China.
This desert is home to the largest sand dunes on the planet, of which the highest sand dune in Asia is the Bilutu summit, which stands more than 500 meters high. Despite the hot and dry summer climate, the desert is famous for its 140 lakes interspersed with sand dunes to the south. The name Badain Jaran means “mysterious lakes” in Mongolian.
Some lakes even change color due to the variety of algae, saltwater shrimp, and minerals. Vegetation is scattered around the lake, helping to feed the herds of camels, goats and horses raised by nomads in the desert.
