Mist-covered British beach walls

Meteorological experts explain that dense fog occurs because warm air from the mainland is mixed with cool sea air.

Dan Bourne captured a scene of dense white haze covering the coastline of Land’s End, Cornwall, England at noon on August 3, Sun reported. The highest temperature was around 33 degrees Celsius.

The images attract a lot of attention when shared on social media. “It’s very beautiful. I saw the same scene on the east coast, Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve. You have to be there to see the beauty of it,” commented John George.

This natural phenomenon is stratospheric fog, said Craig Snell of the UK Weather Service. Stratospheric fog occurs when two different gases mix together, causing the hotter air to cool rapidly and thicken, creating a thick wall of fog.

“This phenomenon is quite common and not unusual. It often happens in the spring, but it can also occur at other times of the year. In this case, the warm air comes out of the mainland and merges with it. ” Fresh air in the sea, ā€¯Snell explained.
