Are people going to build a “warehouse like” on the Moon in the event of “the end of the world”?

Species could be wiped out from Earth in the unexpected ‘apocalypse’ scenario, so the idea of building a barn on the moon to store the eggs, sperm, frozen seeds and genetic material of 6.7 million of species, according to Forbes.

This is the idea of a group of researchers and staff at the University of Arizona, USA. They attended the IEEE Aerospace Conference last weekend and presented details of their ideas.

The team proposed to build a complex in lava caves on the Moon, powered by robots and powered by solar cells placed on the surface of the Moon.

Why do we need such a thing? Volcanoes, earthquakes, civil wars, nuclear wars, ice ages, climate change and sudden pandemics can wipe out all species on Earth in the blink of an eye.

In fact, in 2008, people built an “apocalypse” located in Norway near the North Pole, a safe seed bank called the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. It holds millions of copies of seeds in response to the sudden loss of ecological diversity.

However, this is no longer as safe as people would like. The Svalbard tunnel faces rising temperatures and is only 130m above sea level. In 2017, flooding caused by melting ice and snow flooded the hatch.

The Moon becomes a potential candidate when it is only 384,400 km from Earth and there are no extreme natural disasters like on Earth. It is empty and cold, making it the perfect place for a second warehouse to reduce the risk of biodiversity loss.

“Projects like this give me the feeling that humanity is slowly approaching a civilization in space and a near future where humanity is basing its foundations on the Moon and Mars,” he said. study graduate Álvaro Díaz-Flores Caminero from the University of Arizona.
