According to research from the University of Virginia (USA), the giant snake-shaped “ghost” is a “galaxy chain”, which is the remnant of an ancient galaxy swallowed up by the Milky Way. The Milky Way, or the galaxy containing Earth, has long been known as a “monster” -type galaxy, which has engulfed at least 16 other galaxies to reach today’s giant size.
The Astrophysical Journal publication shows that throughout the Milky Way, there are quite a few longitudinal strands of this galaxy. The fibers that flow through the solar system do not affect our mother star or the planets, including Earth, although it is enough to shake the galaxy.
According to Phys.org, the chain running through the solar system is a remnant of the dwarf spherical galaxy of Sagittarius, which collided with the Milky Way 3 billion years ago and crashed.
Their main goal, according to research team astronomer Xinlun Cheng, is to find out why galactic disc structures, rather than symmetry, warp, with curved edges constantly moving around the outer edge of the galaxy. .
Using information from the APOGEE infrared spectroscopy device that the University of Virginia has developed over the years, combined with data from the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Gaia satellite, the astronomers captured are the aforementioned distortion galaxies – to the origin of the disturbance.
