Hawaiian shark attack kills one

The 65-year-old from California was attacked by a shark while swimming in shallow water 60 meters from shore.

A shark attack on the island of Maui, Hawaii, killing a resident while swimming, local authorities said Thursday. This is the first shark death in the state of Hawaii in the past four years.

The victim was a 65-year-old man from California. He was attacked while swimming in calm waters on the west side of the island, about 60 meters from the shore. The Maui Fire Department and Public Safety quickly dispatched a helicopter and lifeboat to the scene after receiving the telegram. The man was revived, revived immediately after being ashore but could not survive.

“When we arrived I saw blood on the victim’s abdomen and wrist. The left leg coming down from the knee was bitten by the shark,” said Allison Keller, a witness at the scene.

Officials are not sure what shark species were involved in the attack, but shark expert Michael Domier said the possible culprit was a tiger shark. “For some reason Maui is a hotspot in the Hawaiian Islands due to shark attacks. The island’s habitat with lots of shallow water appears to be the perfect destination for tiger sharks,” Domier said. .
